By unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees, this year’s honoree to receive the Virignia Holocaust Museum’s Neil J. November Award is The Most Reverend Walter F. Sullivan. He will be awarded this great honor at a Gala dinner to be held at the Museum on Sunday, September 11, 2005. Bishop Sullivan was the eleventh bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond until he retired on September 18, 2004. He has been an integral part of the Museum’s progress before and after his retirement.
Three years ago, the Virginia Holocaust Museum’s Board of Trustees created a special award to recognize extraordinary leadership and service to the Museum. The award was named for and first awarded to Neil J. November, longtime supporter of the museum and who was responsible for the Museum’s phenomenal growth. The second joint honorees were Jay and Sunny Weinberg and Marcus and Carole Weinstein, who were honored at a wonderful event last year.

“Bishop Sullivan is a warm, compassionate spiritual leader with a broad vision of tolerance and inclusion,” says Jay Weinberg, Chairman of this year’s event. “He is a consummate spiritual and community leader and was the first Catholic Bishop to commission a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, which graces the hollowed grounds of his Cathedral in Richmond. He gives us great joy in accepting this well deserved honor.”
The Bishop remains active in the Catholic Diocese, and is a national leader of the religious community’s involvement in the work of justice and peace. He is a member of Pax Christi USA and has been active in the Catholic Peace Movement. He also serves on the boards of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, the Council for America’s First Freedom and the Center of Concern in Washington, DC, and Bridging Boundaries International. With all of his work in opening communication, teaching tolerance among religions, and supporting the mission of the Virginia Holocaust Museum through his work, we are honored to present the 2005 Neil J. November award to The Most Reverend Walter F. Sullivan.
